How does Laser Hair Removal Work?
A beam of light passes through the skin to the intended target. The target for hair removal is the melanin, present in all hair follicles. The melanin absorbs this light, disabling or impeding the hair's regrowth.
Is it Safe?
Yes, the procedure is completely safe and FDA approved.
Is it Affordable?
Relative to a lifetime of waxing, shaving or plucking, laser hair removal is extremely affordable.
Is it Painful?
This is a common initial concern for many of our patients. Patients have described the sensation from laser hair removal as discomfort rather than pain. The process feels like a rubber band being snapped against your skin with an awareness of heat.
Who can be treated?
Laser is most effective on Dark hair; blonde or gray hair respond poorly. No matter what skin type you have, you're more likely to experience good results and fewer side effects if you have no history of abnormal scarring, excessive sun exposure, allergies or herpes infection. We will be happy to set up a consultation with you to ensure you are a right candidate.
What areas can be treated?
Laser hair removal can be performed on almost area of the body for men and women – from small areas such as your upper lip, underarms, bikini area, chin, neck, and face, to larger areas such as arms, chest, back, and legs.
Can I resume normal activity after treatment?
Yes, you can resume normal activities immediately following your procedure.
How many treatments do I need?
Laser treatment impairs the growth of hair follicles when they are in the growth (or anagen) cycle. At any one time there will only be certain hairs in that growing phase. Therefore, consistent treatments at appropriate intervals are necessary for the best possible results. The number of treatments required depends upon your skin, hair coloring, coarseness of the hair and density per treated area.
How long will the procedure take?
This varies depending on the area of the body. Treatments on the back or legs can take up to one hour, while treatments of the underarms and bikini generally take 30 minutes.
How soon will the hair fall out?
Surface hair will come off immediately, the "root" in 2 to 3 weeks.
How many sessions will it require before I notice significant results?
At least 2 sessions are required before you will be able to tell a difference in the amount of hair.
Are the results Permanent?
All options for laser hair removal offer a varying degree of permanence. Studies have shown that many patients can achieve permanent hair loss of up to 80 -90% and remaining hair returns lighter and softer.
What is the Hair Growth Cycle?
Each of your hair follicles is in one of 3 stages of growth:
The laser is most effective at disabling "actively growing" hairs during treatment. It is during anagen, the hair contains the greatest abundance of melanin, the target of the laser light. Many hair follicles are in their resting or regressive stages at any given time.
What are the risks of laser hair removal?
Immediately after the treatment you may experience a slight reddening or swelling of the skin that will resolve within few hour or days. In rare instances temporary pigment changes may occur, but will disappear in few months.
What pre-treatment care is required?
You MUST stop plucking or waxing hair four weeks for laser to be effective. Avoid the sun, tanning and tanning creams 7-14 days before and after YAG treatments or 4-6 weeks before and after GentleLASE treatments. If you have a tan from sun exposure or sunless tanning products, you must wait until the tan fades completely before you can undergo laser hair removal. Avoid irritants such as products containing glycolic acid or Retin-A in the area for 5-7 days. Shave the desired treatment area the night before laser treatment. Do not wear make-up or deodorant over the area you want treated when coming for treatment. You should plan on wearing clothing that will allow easy access to the area being treated. Do not wear any jewelry including wrist watch during the procedure.
What can you expect during the procedure?
During the procedure, as a safety precaution, you wear goggles to protect your eyes from accidental exposure to laser light. You may notice a strong odor of singed hair, which is normal. Afterward, you may experience some temporary redness and swelling which resolve within a few hours to days. In rare cases, you may experience hypo
What post-treatment is required?
It is best if you minimize sun exposure to the treated area for four weeks after the procedure. You MUST wear a sunscreen of SPF25 or higher and avoid sun exposure to the treated area for 4 weeks. Avoid irritants such as products containing glycolic acid or Retin-A in the area for 5-7 days. The procedure may causes a slight scabbing of the teated area. Do not rub or pick the scab - wash gently using a mild soap. Hair remaining in the follice will come off within 1-2 weeks after treatment.
